Barnett Freedman's (1901-1958) distinctive illustrations were largely executed using the complex, technically unpopular medium of auto-lithography, a process whereby the artist drew directly onto the stone or plate. This technique demanded the equipment deployed by the leading lithographic press houses of the day - Curwen, Baynard and Faber. Freedman's commitment and skill resulted in some of the finest illustrations of his generation and he was practically unrivalled in the technique, ranking him alongside Ravilious and Bawden.
