H H Judge Burgis (1937) £250

Signed pencil drawing, dated 19th July 1937. Drawing measures 29cm x 28cm. Note : This work is mentioned in Robert Meyrick ‘The Etchings and Engravings of Edgar Holloway’. Referring to etching number 123, Meyrick writes, ‘Holloway met Sir Edwin Burgis at The Old England Hotel, Sutton-on-Trent. He bought a picture from Holloway and invited him to visit his home in Barlaston, near Macclesfield. Holloway made two pencil drawings – the first in a lounge suit and the other in full regalia of wig and gown. The latter, Holloway recalled (this drawing) ‘would have made the most interesting etching. However he preferred not to be depicted in his working clothes.’ Provenance : Wolseley Fine Arts. Conservation mounted.
