Bawden was born in 1903 and developed a celebrated career as an artist, print maker, illustrator and painter of murals. His illustrative work is characterised by a strong sense of narrative and humour with a feeling for pattern and texture. Bawden met Paul Nash at the RCA and was introduced to the Curwen Press. His most important relationship was with Eric Ravilious with whom he established the Great Bardfield School in the early 1930’s. Bawden died in 1989.
