This is a very rare original etching, printed from the plate. In the Douglas Cleverdon edition ‘The Engravings of David Jones’ printed by Clover Hill in 1981, only a facsimile is reproduced, printed on Hodomura paper (see neighbouring image which is included with this item). A note is made under E201 directory that ‘The plate was apparently abandoned, but has survived in a battered and corroded condition.’ This impression though explains that the edition published was later further worked by Jones. This impression was made in 1982 (one year after the Clover Hill publication) features additional working to the unicorn’s horn, and the shepherds’ feet, as well as the removal of such features as the markings on the animals and tree trunks, and the simplification of the foliage. These amendments were made by David Jones after 1929. The etching border is initialled ‘DC’ (presumably Douglas Cleverdon) and 32 impressions were produced. This is one of the impressions made on hand made Hodomura paper (rather than the 16 printed on Japon). The Hodomura paper has a naturally fibrous quality and the colouration to the borders are fibres in the paper rather than staining. The etching plate measures 20.2cm x 15.7cm plus full borders. The published facsimile in the Cleverdon edition, printed on Hodomura, is included for comparison (see neighbouring image) Both conservation mounted. *Please see ‘JONES, David’ under ‘Our Artists’ for more images*
