L’Apres-Midi D’Un Faune (1936) £475

The original binding brass which was used to impress the image of the front cover of the published volume ‘L’Apres-Midi D’Un Faune’, 1936. Electrotype printing plate, measuring 15cm x 17.3cm overall. Note: the line of the binding brass is raised, rather than incised, such that an impression can be made.

L’Apres-Midi D’Un Faune was to be the third of Wright’s private editions and he had the sheets printed in Holland in 1936 while he worked on the illustrations. The sheets remained inaccessible until after the war, but Wright seemed to have moved on. Two years after his death in 1954, the Golden Cockerel Press published an English translation of the work using four wash drawings found by Wright’s widow, reproducing them in collotype. The book was one of the Golden Cockerel Presses ‘SPECIALS’, with 4 additional experimental engravings, (1 of 100), out of an edition limited to 200 numbered copies.

Provenance: The Golden Cockerel Press. The private collection of David Chambers.

Only copper plate available. Printed image for reference only.
