Swiss born Grock (1880-1959) was once the most highly paid entertainer in Europe and regarded as ‘the greatest of Europe’s clowns.’
In the biography, you will note Bissill met the ballet critic, Arnold Haskell in 1925. Haskell took Bissill to Paris to explore the theme of ballet and harlequins, resulting in a suite of important wood engravings which were presented back in London. To study Grock would have been regarded as essential to complete his clown and harlequin series..
