FRINK, Elizabeth

Dame Elisabeth Frink’s was a British sculptor and graphic artist. Some of her early work—influenced by Giacometti—was angular and menacing. During the 1960s her figures—typically horses and riders or male nudes—became smoother, but she retained a feeling of the bizarre in the polished goggles that feature particularly in her over-life-size heads. She worked mainly in bronze and had numerous public commissions, for example Horse and Rider (1975) in Piccadilly, London, made for Trafalgar House Investments Ltd. Later in her career she also did numerous portrait busts of distinguished sitters. In addition to sculpture she made prints and drawings.

In 1972 Frink illustrated an edition of Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales and is a celebrated milestone in modern British printmaking and book illustration. Published by Leslie Waddington Prints (London), the monumental publication featured full-page etchings with aquatint drawn directly onto copper plates by Frink. She experimented heavily with open bite, scraping, aquatint, and burnishing to create deeply incised, scarified textures mirroring her monumental sculptures. The prints center on character types and robust archetypes—knights, clerics, and animals highlighting human aggression, desire, and mortality.
