GOETZ, Walter

Walter Goetz (1911-1995) was a German-British cartoonist, best known for his pantomime newspaper comic strips ‘Colonel Up and Mr. Down’ (1934-1949) and ‘Dab and Flounder’ (1934?-1954). Goetz is also known as the illustrator of Pierre Danino’s ‘Major Thompson’ novels. A self taught artist, his own style was influenced by Dufy. His success awarded him a one man show at The Leicester Galleries (1940), St George Gallery (1946) and The Redfern Gallery (1949). He also dealt in Old Masters and Impressionist paintings and drawings and was an agent for John Piper.
