WASHINGTON, Earl M

Earl Marshawn Washington (born 1962) is an American printmaker, and engraver. Beginning in 1998, woodcut prints began appearing on the market; Washington claiming that the woodcuts were originals by famous artists and others were made by his great-grandfather, “Earl Mack Washington” (1862 – 1952). His grandfather had supposedly rescued the woodblocks from a fire-bombed Manhattan print shop in the 1880s. By 2004, EM Washington (b. 1962) admitted to creating the wood engraved images with such ability that the works convinced collectors and connoisseurs alike. The convincing nature of the scam has earned Earl M. Washington worldwide recognition as a wood engraver and is now collected in his own right. Many examples are forgeries in that they exist in collections with convincing signatures and dates. This collection for sale are either signed or inscribed ‘EM Washington’ – evidence that the market and recognition for Washington’s work now exists in its own right.
