Robinson’s extensive research in organic chemistry included contributions on natural colouring matters, alkaloids, steroids and synthetic oestrogens and helped to lay the foundations of the modern electronic theory of organic chemical reactions. He won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1947. The completed work is in The National Portrait Gallery.
